Multiple land-use through effective usage of subsurface dimension
by Frank van der Hoeven

Tunnelling the Tiergarten
The reunification of Berlin placed turned the dormant eastern centre
into a stage for frantic
building activities. Tunnels for car, (high speed) trains and
subway have to ensure access to the future central business and governmental
districts of the city, without dividing the city into to halves again.
The Tiergartentunnels do not only free the city of the normal barriers,
noise and pollution when large scale infrastructure is situated overground.
It enables also a cleverly designed multiple land-use for the governmental
quarters in the socalled 'Spreebogen'.
