Multiple land-use through effective usage of subsurface dimension
by Frank van der Hoeven

Beurstraverse
The Beurstraverse, Rotterdam, is a better example of the integration
of underground activities into the realm of the city above. The project
comprises a shopping mall underneath the Beurs-square, extension of
the existing subway station Beurs, replacement of a complete cityblock
and the addition of a high rise residential building.
By placing the commercial functions directly beneath the city surface
(while the public urban space remains in full contact with sunlight
and the open air) the liviness of the undergrounds adds up to the
city as a whole. It does not become a serate world like the example
in Berlin.
On the other hand the location of the carpark can be critized. Situated
on top of the cityblock it cast a shadow over the whole void of the
shopping mall. Photo was taken in september.
