Multiple land-use through effective usage of subsurface dimension

Friedrichstadt Passagen

Also situated in the heart of Berlin is a string of offices, shopping and housing projects along the historical route of the Friedrichsstrasse. Centrepiece forms the Friedrichtadts-passagen, built up out of three dense cityblocks counting eight stories above ground.
The blocks are underneath connected by four commonly shared basements. The use of underground space is resulting in a very dense land-use and a high quality of urban space.
On the other hand, the relationship between above and underground public space is lost by situating the arcades at the second basement level. The only moment in time it becomes clear that these complexes contain a impressive use of underground space is during the construction phase.
